What is Pinkster?
Pinkster began as a Dutch spring holiday, but in New York it became an important celebration for enslaved and free African Americans.
It was a rare time to rest, visit family, gather in community, dance, drum, sell goods, and keep African traditions alive. Over time, Pinkster became a joyful expression of Black culture, memory, and resistance.
Today, it is remembered as one of the oldest African American celebrations in the Northeast.
